Hit me with your best shot

L.A. is a pinata town. There's no need to buy a crappy 12" pinata from the party supply store for $20 when you can go get the real-deal-Holyfield custom made for the same price.

My friend threw a party for her son and got a Buzz Lightyear pinata, after TWENTY kids beat that thing it was virtually indestructible. Unheard of! Forget those new fangled politcally correct PULL STRING pinatas - we are old skool and like to beat ours to death with a stick. So I asked her where she got it and she pointed me to La Pinata party supply.

La Pinata is located in Venice, great for Westsiders who don't want to drive all the way out to east L.A. to get their pinata on. The store is small (they're moving now) and nondescript.

There are a few pinatas hanging on the ceiling, nothing special. But what you'll notice is their size. These are no ordinary pinatas, they were all at least 4 feet tall. I showed them a picture I drew of O.G. just to see what they'd come up with. I asked her to please keep it small, er - they don't do small.

When I went to pick up the pinata I couldn't stop laughing. It was so cute and HUGE, but perfectly well made. These guys are good. It was so large I had a hard time wrangling it into my car. I had half a mind to strap her into the passenger seat just so I could take the carpool lane on the freeway.

They have really great ready made pinatas - Disney Princesses, Cars, etc - but can also do most anything custom - so it seems from my Grandma pinata. The pinatas are all under $20 (unbelievable!) and the custom ones, depending on how complicated, are only around $25. Quite a steal.

I brought the O.G. pinata home and propped her up by the door. Every morning I could hear the kids scream, 'AHHH! Great Grandma pinata scared me!" Yeah, she startled me a bit too when I walked around the corner. The pinata is bigger than the kids! I took the O.G. pinata to her surprise party where everyone thought it was hilarious. The little lady fit right in! (party details, here)

I will be coming back to La Pinata for all my party needs, or if I just get lonely and need another O.G. to hang out with me.

I drive past that place all the time and always wondered what was inside. (I had guessed piñatas. I was right!)

Wow, that's like 4x better than the Godzilla piñata the Union-Tribune gave me when I quit -- and that was a pretty good piñata!

I've been enjoying your blog for a while now. You always seem to find the wackiest places, I love it. I was looking into getting a pinata for my son's birthday party (along with a mariachi band, and no, we are not Mexican) so I'm super sorry I didn't know about this place before.

That is one good looking granny piñata. I'm sure the kids went excited when they saw it.
