Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can...
When it comes to apps the kids are king. They are the masters of all the games and they know to ask me before anything gets downloaded. However when it comes to comics or Disney/Marvel apps the answer from me is pretty much always YES.
To coincide with the release of the new movie The Amazing Spider-Man, Disney has released the 'Spider-Man AR Book HD' for the iPhone and iPad. It's an interactive app that lets the reader follow Peter Parker's transformation into Spider-Man.
Now here's the thing, my kids aren't allowed to use my iPad...ever. It's for work purposes only - but when I read about the app I really wanted to try it out so we downloaded it together and I have to say I was hooked.
As you can tell I like to work a few times a week while sitting at a bakery and the Kid comes with me. Also of note: a cookie and homemade paper spears are a must for the Kid's workstation.
The Spider-Man app is a movie-story book that you can either be read to you or for older kids, they can 'turn' the pages and read along by themselves. Now here's the coolest part - the app uses augmented reality- this means that elements within the story come to life!
By holding the iPad in front of you and lining it up just right, you become part of the story. This was tricky at first, but the app gives clear directions on how to do it. The Kid quickly got the hang of it and it allows you to virtually put on Peter's Dad's glasses, a Spider-Man mask, even have spiders crawl on your face! (I wasn't fond of that one, EW.)
The kids loved reading the story and playing with the app and I even took it over to O.G.'s house for our weekly family dinner and all the adults really got into it!
I like that this app is a book and game combined. It's a perfect way to integrate some summer reading and fun at the same time!
